Problems with WSS Search not crawling local SharePoint sites that use a host header.
23 July 09 02:05 | Simon Phillips | with no comments

I’ve been having an issue recently with a customers search not working for their new WSS sites. For this we have used host headers.

The event log was filling up with the following events:

Event Type:      Warning
Event Source:    Windows SharePoint Services 3 Search
Event Category:  Gatherer
Event ID:        2436
Date:            23/07/2009
Time:            12:59:32
User:            N/A
Computer:        #########
Description:
The start address <sts3://<hostheader>/contentdbid={<guid>}> cannot be crawled.

Context: Application 'Search index file on the search server', Catalog 'Search'

Details:
Access is denied. Check that the Default Content Access Account has access to this content, or add a crawl rule to crawl this content.   (0x80041205)

For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

This is due to the same problem that I was having a couple of months ago when I could not access local SharePoint sites that use host headers on the server (Unable to log on to SharePoint web applications from the local web server - Simon Phillips).

Where we assumed that time the problem was due to IE8, the same code is now in updates to Win 2003 / Win 2008. The workaround is the same where you basically create a white-list of host names that the computer will except as resolving to itself.

  • Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.
  • In Registry Editor, locate and then click the following registry key:

    HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa\MSV1_0

  • Right-click MSV1_0, point to New, and then click Multi-String Value.
  • Type BackConnectionHostNames, and then press ENTER.
  • Right-click BackConnectionHostNames, and then click Modify.
  • In the Value data box, type the host name or the host names for the sites that are on the local computer, and then click OK.
  • Exit Registry Editor, and then restart the computer.
